Red Tails Movie Premiere, Ziegfeld Theater...NYC

Last Tuesday I went to the New York premiere of George Lucas's new film, Red Tails—a story about the first all African-American aerial combat unit, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, during WW II—at the Ziegfeld Theater. The film is directed by Anthony Hemingway and stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Nate Parker, David Oyelowa and Elijah Kelley. The cast also includes recording artist, Ne-Yo, whose music I love.
Following the premiere was the afterparty at Gotham Hall, DJ'd by my personal favorite, Crazy Legs of the Rock Steady Crew.

A very special thank you to the lovely Norma Garcia-Muro, director of international marketing for Lucasfilm and hubby, Andrew Muro. For being the backbone of this enormous event, Norma was nothing but calm, cool and collected. God I love that!

New Year's Eve Eve in Times Square, NYC...

Last night I went to a Broadway show a block away from Times Square. Since I've never done New Year's Eve there—and am pretty sure I'd never want to—I was still curious about what kind of mob scene was congregating on the eve of the 'big eve.' As expected, it was total craziness! Nice to see everyone so excited about tonight's festivities, though, so I hope they enjoy. Like most of you, I'll be watching the ball drop from TV.

Fashion's Night Out, NYC

I love Fashion's Night Out. It's the kick-off of New York Fashion Week and the city's shops and streets are alive and celebrating, giving everyone an excuse to splurge in the name of fashion and to support the economy. This year, I headed uptown with my girls, Danielle Saxe and stylist, Robyn Fernandes to indulge in the festivities. Our first stop: Guissepe Zanotti, one of my favorite shoe designers, on Madison Avenue. To our surprise, Mr. Zanotti himself was at the boutique! I was even lucky enough to get some one-on-one time with him, find out what his top 3 favorite shoes were in the collection and have him help me pick out a pair for myself. The icing on the cake? He signed them for me!

Our next stop was the Lanvin store, where former mega-model, Iman and Elle magazine's, Joe Zee hosted a dance-off based on Lanvin's fall ad campaign directed by Steven Miesel. Click here to check it out.

I joined my good friend, blogger and fashion writer extraordinaire, Glenn Belverio last Monday evening for a party at the SoHo Grand Hotel to celebrate the official launch of the Six Scents Parfums and Elements Showcase. We didn't stay long, just enough to catch up with a few friends about recent travels, movies we recommend seeing (Glenn's pick is a Brazilian film called Waste Land) and contemplate one (or two) more cocktails.

Day 2: Rock Steady Crew 34th Anniversary, Outdoor Concert

It's the grand finale of the Rock Steady Crew Anniversary: The free outdoor concert, held once again at Lincoln Park in Newark, NJ on Sunday, July 31st. This year's lineup included performances by the Cold Crush Brothers, Keith Murray, Rahzel, The Large Professor, and so many more. But the highlight of the concert for me was the amazing performance by the crew themselves (see the video below). Here's to another year—happy anniversary, Rock Steady!

Working out those knots isn't always a pleasant feeling, though, especially when you have a lot of tension in your shoulders, like Legs. At least she's always smiling while inflicting the pain.

In all the years I've been covering the Anniversary on my blog, I've never shown pictures of the marketplace inside the concert. It's really cool. And the food...! I look forward to it every year. Rock Steady Crew 34th Anniversary, NYC

Every summer hundreds of b-boys, b-girls and die hard hip-hop heads from all over the world congregate to New York City to celebrate the annual Rock Steady Crew Anniversary. This year, the crew celebrated its 34th with 2 days of b-boy/b-girl battles, a free outdoor concert and, of course, after parties. Not one to ever miss the event (I'm a huge fan of the crew's president, Crazy Legs), here's my full coverage.

Saturday, July 30th:
One-on-One and Crew Battles @ Red Bull space on Thompson St., NYC

It's so cool when the kids get down. This one in the camo shorts danced like he was 18.

Reminds of me this one, RSC's own Bailrok, who showed up at the Anniversary just a few years ago and blew everyone's socks off with his dancing. The next year he was IN Rock Steady. And these days, he's traveling around the world performing.

It never ceases to amaze me what these guys can do with their bodies.

Opening Reception of Ed Templeton's "Teenage Kissers" Photo Exhibit @ Half Gallery...Lower East Side, NYC

Last night I went to the opening reception of artist, photographer and pro-skater, Ed Templeton's new photo exhibit, "Teenage Kissers" at the Half Gallery in the Lower East Side. The title pretty much sums it up—the show features a collection of brilliant (and sometimes funny) photos of young people kissing. Half Gallery is at 208 Forsyth Street. The show is up until the end of July. Check it out!

Designer Cynthia Rowley. When I approached her I was so focused on her shoes that I didn't realize it was her. It wasn't until I asked, "Who makes them?" that I got a good look at her as she answered (slowly), "C-y-n-thia R-o-w-ley..."

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty @ the MET...NYC

I finally had the chance to check out Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In a word: extraordinary! A must-see if you are in New York City. The brilliantly curated exhibit celebrates the late designer's work with over 100 ensembles (to see them up close and personal is truly amazing), 70 accessories, short films and highlights from his famously theatrical runway shows. The exhibit runs until July 31st. This is one you don't want to miss! (And p.s., if you can, buy the book. It's $45 and worth every single penny.)

Springtime in Paris

I just returned home from a wonderful trip to Paris. The city is absolutely stunning this time of year (we lucked out with perfect 76 degree and sunny weather). There are so many things about the city that I love, one of them in particular, the breathtaking flowers.

Strolling on Rue de Rivoli, we stumbled upon a bustling outdoor market in Le Marais. I've never seen calla lillies quite like these.

Peonies and hydrangeas are my two favorite flowers. In Paris, they are enormous and everywhere!

Opening Reception of artist Nicolas Pol's solo exhibition, "Sick Atavus of the New Blood"

I went to the opening reception of Paris-based artist, Nicolas Pol's new solo exhibition on May 5th called, Sick Atavus of the New Blood, presented by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld (son of Carine Roitfeld, former editor-in-chief of French Vogue). The show was held at an industrial space at 500 Washington Street in Soho and featured 36 new paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Carine Roitfeld, who looked like she was thoroughly enjoying her new-found freedom, showed up mid-evening.

The exhibition "points at the morbidity and violence that undergirds every one of Pol’s rough strokes. Yet it also belies a technological paranoia, both in the sci-fi reference of “Atavus,” and, perhaps, in whatever manner that “new blood” springs forth." (The word "Atavus," by the way, is Latin. It has different meanings, such as "a great-grandfather's grandfather, an ancestor," but Pol's use of the word, he said, has to do with "genital irritation." Here, the show's centerpiece.

The Perfect Black Jumpsuit

I'm always in search of those perfect black wardrobe staples: the pant, the dress, the jacket, the shoe. Recently I've been on the hunt for "the perfect black jumpsuit," with no avail, of course. The problem? There's a hundred choices but, for whatever reason (price, fit, detail) nothing is just right. I've had my eye on these 3, which narrows down my search. Now the question is: WHICH ONE?

Day Birger et Mikkelsen - $465. The embellishment is a bonus, but then everything else (shoes, accessories) has to work around it.

Thakoon Addition - $625. Gorgeous—love the drape. Would obviously need to have the legs hemmed unless I plan on always wearing it with 6" platforms. Which brings up another thought, with this silhouette, I'm locked into a pant length that will always require sky-high heels (that's just me...).

Yves Saint Laurent - $2490. There is nothing I don't LOVE about this jumpsuit...except the price tag.

José Parlá: Walls, Diaries and Paintings - Opening Reception and Book Signing, NYC

One of my favorite artists, and friend, José Parlá celebrated his new solo exhibition, "Walls, Diaries and Paintings" on March 3rd at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in Chelsea. The exhibit features 15 amazing new paintings, each one like a snapshot from José's memory of an aged city wall he's seen throughout his travels, distressed with layers of paint, old posters and grafitti. The exhibit is up until April 6th and I highly recommend seeing it if you're in NYC. The gallery also hosted a book signing the following Saturday at The Standard Hotel's Boom Boom Room. Not sure where you can buy it, but if you're fan (like me), it's definitely worth getting.

A lovely guest. So many things I liked about her look: the incredibly long gold earrings (a little dangerous if you think about it, but I'm sure she was very careful with them), her adorable black jumpsuit and, below, her rockin' studded booties.

The Boom Boom Room is on the 18th floor of the Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District. One of the draws of the hotel is the floor-to-ceiling glass walls with stunning panoramic city views...

Even the bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling glass walls. This is what you get to look at when you're sitting down and, well, you know...

PETA's Fashion Week Party @ Stella McCartney & Adidas Denim Bash, NYC

PETA kicked-off Fashion Week Thursday night with a party at the Stella McCartney store in the Meatpacking District. The soiree was hosted by Tim Gunn of Project Runway, with legendary Lady Bunny on the ones and twos. My date, fashion writer and blogger Glenn Belverio, and I are not PETA members (most of the guests there weren't), so, admittedly, we were a tad nervous about what was appropriate to wear, especially in the dead of winter. Was I going to get paint balled for toting my leather Marc Jacobs bag, or would someone purposely pour champagne all over Glenn's suede Lanvin shoes? Not the case at all (phew). In fact, some guests arrived clad in black leather jackets (note to self: next time go ahead and wear your Rick Owens) and even a shearling coat (although, technically not fur).

Last night I joined my good friend, fashion writer and blogger Glenn Belverio, for an intimate penthouse party at the W Hotel to celebrate Fashion Next—a seasonal initiative that sponsors emerging designers during Fashion Week. This season's chosen ones: Frank Tell, Mandy Coon, Mara Hoffman, Tess Giberson and Michael Angel, whose Fall 2011 collections will be presented next week at Lincoln Center during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Brazilian sportswear line, Osklen, threw a casual cocktail party last Thursday, Jan. 19th at its store on Wooster Street to celebrate Interview Magazine's "L.A. Art World", featured in its December/January issue. The story boasts that "some of the most provocative, potent art being created in the United States today isn’t coming out of New York City but clear across the continent in Los Angeles" so I'm sure there was some connection (unbeknownst to me) as to why the party was hosted by the Brazil-based brand here in NYC. In any event, thank you to my good friend, stylist Robyn Fernandes for inviting me. Here, a few fashionable guests.

Frank151 Presents: Ricky Powell - "Bug Out".....Launch Party, NYC

Famed NYC street photographer Ricky Powell collaborated with Frank 151 on the latest issue of its Frank Book—a quarterly publication that selects "special guest curators" to direct its editorial themes. The latest issue, which Ricky titled "Bug Out," features a brand new series of photos, as well as collaborations with a collection of artists. To celebrate the launch, Frank151 hosted a party at Sacred Gallery last Thursday night in downtown NYC, where the photos will be on exhibit until Dec. 28. Definitely one to check out if you're in the city.

Six Scents: Series Three Party @ The Greenwich Club, NYC

Six Scents Parfum celebrated the official launch of its third series of limited-edition fragrances Friday night with a big bash at 3 Legged Dog in downtown NYC. The annual collaboration pairs six visionary fashion designers with perfumers to create unisex fragrances around a specific theme. This year's chosen designers: Alexis Mabille, Mary Katrantzou, Junn.J, Rad Hourani, N.Hoolywood, and Ohne Titel—and the theme: "innocence to experience, the nature of childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity."

Each individually numbered perfume bottle is packaged in a collectible box complete with a cool designer portrait by Robert Knoke and a special DVD featuring seven short films, including one by Alia Raza, which stars Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and is written by 14-year-old wunderkind, blogger Tavi Gevinson. As if that weren't enough to warrant the $149 price tag, a percentage of the proceeds goes towards the War Child International charity.

I caught up with my fab friend Glenn Belverio Thursday night and saw this girl. Really liked her big bow and draped off-the-shoulder jacket. (Had a kind of Madonna vibe, circa 1986—love!).

This year's lineup included Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, Black Sheep, Kurtis Blow, Noreaga...and so many more. One of the highlights for me, though, was watching Rock Steady Crew's new generation of members shine. They maybe be young and still paying dues, but they proved they can definitely hold their own with the pioneers.

Rock Steady Crew 33rd Anniversary, NYC

It's what b-boys, b-girls and hip-hop heavyweights look forward to every summer: the Rock Steady Crew Anniversary in NYC—and this year marked its 33rd. The weekend-long event kicked off on July 31st, commencing with one-on-one and crew battles and ending with the Anniversary's always anticipated finale, the free outdoor concert (with after parties in between).

This year I told myself I wouldn't bother taking pictures of people dancing because my lil' Coolpix camera is 1) semi-busted, and 2) just isn't fast enough to capture the speed of action. So instead, I give you photos from RSC's newest member, photographer extraordinaire, Mr. Joe Conzo. (Thanks for always being so generous, Joe!) You might notice a subtle difference in clarity and color between his and my pictures...

Even in mid-air this guy managed to stare down his opponent with major attitude...

I'm just going to come out and say it: I wish more b-boys and b-girls would get"fresh" when they come out to compete. I don't know if this guy was the best dancer at the event (or even the best-dressed), but I can appreciate his lemon-lime flavor. He even made the effort of doing mismatched, yet still color coordinated, socks.

Crew Battles: This is when the heat really gets turned up! It never ceases to amaze me how much skill and strength these dancers have. Some of the routines they broke out were absolutely incredible. (Why I don't own a video cam...?)

Victory: The crew gets flown to London in October to represent the U.S. at the Sony Ericsson U.K. B-boy Championships World Finals.

Generation Next: RSC's youngest member, B-boy Bailrok. Don't let that cute face fool you. This lil' guy will tear you up on the dance floor. It was exactly a year ago that his parents brought him to the 32nd Anniversary, where he pretty much stole the show. (Not much has changed since then...except now he's more than just a guest, he's a member. )

Every year, Rock Steady Crew gives out the Spy Award, recognizing dancers who they believe represent the art of breaking to its highest degree of integrity (as the award says, "Spy’s partnership with the music showed that in order to rock the floor, you first had to let the music rock your soul.") This year, it went to b-boy Moy (unfortunately he wasn't able to be there). Here, RSC vice prez, Popmaster Fabel, finishes the award with his signature.

I mentioned earlier that Joe Conzo was RSC's newest member. Joe has been capturing hip-hop culture through the magic of his lens for decades and has sort of been an unofficial member of Rock Steady Crew for some time. Well, this year, they finally made it "official." Here, Crazy Legs and members of RSC huddle and devise a plan on how to trick Joe into thinking he's just going to take a picture...

As Joe waited to take the shot, Legs asked him to please join them in front of the camera, welcoming him into the crew.

Spain Wins the World Cup...NYC

I'm not a huge sports person, and admittedly, I didn't watch much of the World Cup. But being that today was the big game, I headed to the Meatpacking District to watch Spain and the Netherlands duke it out over a very long brunch. As expected, the bars and restaurants in the neighborhood were alive and packed with fans (mostly of Spain), bringing an overwhelming feeling of camaraderie—and celebrating—to the streets, which I love!

The New Grand Tour: Group Exhibition...Opening Reception, NYC

I stopped by the opening reception of "The New Grand Tour: Group Exhibition" on Thursday evening at the Brian Wolkowitz Gallery on 24th St in Chelsea to see one of my favorite artists, José Parlá. The show also features works by Deanne Cheuk, Rey Parlá, Rostarr, Suitman and Davi Russo. The concept of The Grand Tour: the artists traveled for 13 days in the Far East back in 2007, starting in Shanghai and eventually making their way to Beijing, creating new works inspired by the places they visited. (The original concept was born in the late 16th century, but was reserved for young aristocrats who traveled throughout Europe.) The exhibition ends on July 17. I highly recommend checking it out.

I caught up with my good friend Christina on Friday night at Hotel Griffou—a cool hidden townhouse-turned-dining club hotspot on 9th Street in the West Village. She wore a crystal rope necklace (her latest purchase from Madewell) which turned out to be a surprise hit amongst the bartenders. Here, they demonstrate that the boys can rock bedazzled necklaces, and look fabulous doing it, too.

My good friend Markus Maverick went to see the one and only Vivienne Westwood last Thursday night as she took the mic at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern (also known as RVT) in South London for a live comedy chat show called Scott Capurro's Position. Here, a few words and pictures from the evening, compliments of Markus:

"The RVT is a very famous gay pub but on that night it was quite a mixed crowd. After the show I was one of the only people she chatted to. She's so kind and very sweet, though I imagine if you got on the wrong side of her she wouldn't be..."

Everyone was captivated by this little old lady as she spouted her words of wisdom. At the end she got rousing cheers and applause."

I had the ultimate privilege of dancing with Madonna last night at SL Club in the Meatpacking District (I can officially check this off of my "Things I Want To Do Before I Die" list). She was there on the 'hush-hush' auditioning dancers for her upcoming tour and—thanks to my boyfriend who was one of the DJ's invited to spin at the exclusive event—I got to get my groove on with her. Unfortunately photo taking was strictly prohibited. (The second I broke out my little Coolpix camera I was politely shut down.) Of course I managed to sneak in a shot or two (sorry Madonna, but I just HAD to). They don't do her justice, but believe me when I tell you she looked absolutely fresh-faced and fabulous—not much makeup and rocking a skin tight black and red minidress, black thigh-high boots and black fingerless gloves. My childhood dream....come true!

After a day of splurging at Jimmy Choo on the Upper East Side, I caught up with my girlfriend Robyn Saturday night at one of my new favorite spots downtown, BONDST on Bond Street. As usual, she turned up looking her casually-cool self, which, for me, means I had to take her picture.

As a stylist, Robyn's always working a look from head-to-toe. Here, her fringed socks and metallic wedge peep-toe ankle booties.

Nike's Syracuse Futura Collection Launch Party...Nike Store, NYC

Legendary New York graffiti artist Futura is a regular when it comes to collaborating with Nike (the two have teamed on limited-edition, collectible sneakers and sportswear for years). On Monday night they celebrated their newest venture—the Syracuse Futura Collection—at Nike's 21 Mercer store in SoHo. I stopped by for a little while, long enough to catch a few pics of Futura and even check out Nike's exclusive design studio (oooh...). Unfortunately I missed the Q & A at the beginning of the party, which I'm told included a few Syracuse University alumni, ESPN's Jay Corbin and, of course, Futura, followed by a raffle where 21 autographed basketballs were given away. O'well. I know as much about basketball as I do about rocket science, so, with that said, click on this link to learn more about the collaboration and purchase pieces from the new collection.

No special occasion, just a random Saturday night out with my girlfriends at a place called Rusty Knot—a nautically-themed, self-proclaimed dive bar on the edge of the West Village.

My girlfriend Laura, wearing a vintage fur jacket and toting a gorgeous Fendi bag. I love how perfectly she blends in with the kitschy wood-paneled walls (if I could be blonde, this is the hair I'd want). Even if I didn't know her, I'd still have asked her if I could take her picture for my blog.

Plan Como, a Spanish company that, to be totally honest, I'm still not exactly sure what they're all about, hosted a lovely party Friday night to promote leather goods made in Spain (I tagged along with my good friend Glenn Belverio). The soiree took place in the penthouse at the Hudson Hotel where guests were treated to a scrumptious spread of Spanish eats and equally delicioso wine and cocktails. Admittedly, I didn't leave with any more knowledge of Spanish leather than I had when I arrived, but Plan Como was kind enough to give me a beautiful, glossy-finished handmade coin purse by a designer called Lolo—made of genuine Spanish leather, of course.

I took another picture of him sans waiter in the background, but unfortunately it came out blurry (I blame the yummy Spanish wine for my unsteady hand). His suit was great—especially with the bright yellow sneakers.

I just returned from a long weekend in London and, already, can't wait to get back. The trip was short, but I managed to get a few good things in: the Sony Ericsson UK B-boy Championships World Finals (click the link for the official website) and Sunday afternoon at Brick Lane with my good friend, photographer/stylist/vintage king Markus Maverick, who you'll be hearing a lot more of here on Josie's House of Style as he's agreed to be the new UK Edition. Brick Lane is probably the best, and as of late, trendiest, flea market in London—sort of an anything-goes marketplace where you'll find everything, from vintage clothes to old-school vinyl. Needless to say it's also a breeding ground for genuinely cool style.

While on the subject of Markus, it was amazing how many people stopped him to either take a picture or to tell him how absolutely fabulous he is. On a totally separate occasion the evening before, a (straight) man—director/producer-type—was literally awe struck by him. So much so that he actually gave him hug because he didn't know what else to do. (Strange, yes. And funny, too.)

Here, a photographer asked him to be in a group photo. Not sure what it was for, but everyone was asked to pretend to tell a secret to the person on their right.

INA Men Store Opening...Prince Street, NYC

It's my favorite designer consignment store—INA, and last night was the unveiling of its newly expanded men's store on Prince Street. I went with my much-missed friend Glenn Belverio, who I haven't seen all summer long (he's been busy jet-setting all over Europe covering Fashion Weeks and being ridiculously fabulous...whatever). The party also served as the setting for a new Bravo reality TV show (tentatively titled Kell on Earth) about Kelly Cutrone, founder of People's Revolution, who also represents INA.

Last night I went to the opening reception and book release party for Street Level: New York Photographs 1987-2007 by celebrated photographer Sue Kwon at the Clic Gallery on Broome Street. Guests—a hip downtown crowd of friends and fans—were packed wall-to-wall to check out Kwon's classic black and whites on exhibit and snatch up a signed copy of her book. Kwon's images capture 'only-in New York' life spanning over 20 years. The exhibit is up until Oct. 4th, so if you're in New York I highly recommend checking it out.

A few blocks away on Greene Street, BoConcept—the Denmark-based uber-urban furniture design store—hosted "Pop is Dead", a themed party that, admittedly, I'm still not totally clear on. Regardless, it was a fun-filled evening that included people in costume (think Michael Jackson, Elvis, Marylin Monroe...that part I got), live art installations and pink cocktails complimentary of Nuvo.

Fashion's Night Out...NYC

It was an evening of extravaganzas: "Fashion's Night Out" on Thursday, Sept. 10 was a city-wide celebration to kick off New York Fashion Week, turning the streets everywhere into one giant runway of style. So, armed with a brand new camera (a high-tech Canon borrowed from my best friend Danielle), I set off to do what I like to do best: shop, enjoy a few drinks and take pictures of fashionable people on the streets.

My first stop, The Mercer, one of my favorite watering holes, to meet up with Danielle for a few glasses vino and a quick crash course on how to use her camera.

Just next door to The Mercer, we stopped into the J.Crew store on Prince Street where my friend, jewelry designer Lisa Finkelstein, was hosting a party and showcasing the new collection. P.S...If you love sparkling, statement pieces (the necklaces are to-die-for) I highly recommend J.Crew jewelry.

Is it just me, or is pretty uncommon to see an old-school VW bus in Manhattan. This one was parked in front of Opening Ceremony (I think they were selling stuff out of it...) My friend Danielle, who grew up with me in Cali and shared the beach-y upbringing of surfer boyfriend's with VW buses, predicts that the surf scene is the next big wave (pun intended) to hit NYC. We'll see...

My favorite shot of the evening: photographer Terry Richardson. I was walking up Greene Street, leaving Opening Ceremony, and just happened to pass him on the street.

Since he was happy to have his picture taken for Josie's House of Style, I of course had to ask him if he'd take a picture with me (he said yes).

Back to surf and NYC. To further support Danielle's prediction we quickly stopped into Saturdays Surf, a concept store that just opened on Crosby Street. Interesting...

I took this somewhere in between Terry, Saturdays and my next destination, the Oak boutique. Bow ties were definitely the accessory of choice for the boys this evening.

Last night I went to an intimate soiree at the insanely beautiful home of Marc Balet in SoHo to celebrate the lovely Rosie Perez and Drena De Niro's birthdays. While I didn't snap too many photos of the familiar celebrity faces (it wasn't a paparazzi-party), I did, of course, take a few of the stylish guests. Happy Birthday, Rosie and Drena!

Louis Vuitton? Marc Jacobs? Yves Saint Laurent? Nope. This bag was woven by hand out of hundreds of chocolate bar wrappers by a designer name unknown. How sweet is that?

Rock Steady Crew 32nd Anniversary Afterparty...Sullivan Room, Soho

The official RSC Anniversary Afterparty on July 26...it's the one event where even the Anniversary producers can finally let off a little steam. This year the party was at Sullivan Room, located on Sullivan Street in New York's Soho neighborhood.
The scene: House music and breakbeats all night long. Combine New York's best Voguers and house dancers with the world's top breakers and you get one insanely fun dance party.

Rock Steady Crew 32nd Anniversary, NYC

The Rock Steady Crew 32nd Anniversary (July 22 - 26) has come and gone yet again and with it, the usual string of events in and around Manhattan: dance workshops, "Frenemies" (solo battles), "For The Funk Of It" funk styles party, crew battles, the "Rock Steady For Life" free outdoor concert and food drive and, of course, the official afterparty. This year something very significant surfaced—a new generation of dancers officially arrived. And I'm not talking about kids who just look cute dancing (although, admittedly, they sure do...awe). I'm talking bona fide, can-hold-their-own-with-the-big-guys Bboys and Bgirls ages 12 and younger. There has always been a slew of kids who come to the Anniversary and do their thing, but I can't remember them being as true-school as this. Very exciting stuff.

A very special thank you to photographer Joe Conzo who so graciously let me use his photos (some things you just gotta leave to the pros). Thanks, Joe!

"Frenemies"
I arrived a little late for this event, but made it in time to catch the kids. One lil' guy in particular stole the show. His Bboy name is Bail-rok and he's 8-yrs-old. His mother calls him the "miracle baby" (for other reasons than his incredible skills...), but he is a phenomenon, indeed! I predict he'll soon become the youngest member of RSC (really).

There's even better video of the lil' guy dancing on stage at the "Rock Steady For Life" concert (coverage on that below...), but here he is battling another kid from the Boogie Brats Crew.

Crazy Legs points out the 'back freeze' tattoo on his leg (an actual image of himself and the Rock Steady logo), while Bail-rok executes the move effortlessly.

Crew Battles
Hands down one of my favorite events, where crews from around the world battle it out on the dance floor. Before the battle began, Bboy Artson, a member of RSC, blessed the crowd with his Native American flute. The sound and song was mystifying—something you'd hear for a spiritual ritual or healing. It was the perfect opening.

A human jump rope—this was amazing! They spun one guy around in the air like a jump rope while another back-flipped over him (what!?). All the while moving and dancing to the beat. Incredible.

"Rock Steady For Life" Free Outdoor Concert and Food Drive
The finale of the Rock Steady Crew Anniversay: the free outdoor concert, which, as of this year, is now a food drive as well (hence the new name). Admission, as always, was free but guests were asked to donate canned or non-perishable food. Always giving back...that's what separates Rock Steady. The lineup up of performers included Biz Markie, Grand Puba (Brand Nubian), U-God (Wu-Tang), Roxanne Shanté, DJ Premier & Blaq Poet, Masta Ace & Edo...and tons more.

Taking the Stage: Lil' Bboy Bail-rok—a born entertainer—works the crowd with his magic. If you have time to watch the whole video you'll catch other kids rockin' the dance floor, too.

Shortly after Roxanne finished her set, there was a sudden change in the weather. In a span of about 3 minutes, the sky filled with clouds and went completely dark. No big deal, we thought, considering it'd been raining on-and-off for the last 2 weeks, and like every other day, today's forecast called for "isolated thunderstorms." No one, however, was prepared for what was about to hit...

Rain, Rain Go Away: Even as the downpour of rain ensued, it wasn't enough to spoil the party...
Rain, Rain (...It Just Wouldn't Go Away):
The downpour continued to worsen, getting heavier and heavier by the minute. The wind gusts were getting extremely strong, too (it even started to hail less than mile away). But fans refused to let the severe conditions rain on their parade (pun intended). For safety precautions, authorities insisted that the electricity and generators be shut down (hey, it's all fun and games until someone gets electrocuted). Still, fans endured. They even started to chant, "hell no we won't go!"

Keeping it Real: Rather than take cover, Crazy Legs stepped down from the stage to brave the rain with fans—the concert now at a complete halt...

Unfortunately, the storm didn't let up and with every passing minute it was getting more and more out of control. Isolated thunderstorms? Try typhoon—no joke. The loads of equipment (tarped and all) were drenched. Even the protected area of the stage became a hazardous zone after the wind suddenly shifted, bringing the water directly in. It got scary. I tried as long as I could to stay outside and take pictures, but sometimes you just can't mess with Mother Nature (that, and I was seriously afraid I might get struck by a bolt of lightening). I had to take cover and put my camera away so it wouldn't get ruined. Thank goodness no one got hurt, but after lightening struck a branch off a tree near the stage, it was time to offically call it quits. The authorities shut the concert down.

The Aftermath: All this in a matter of about one and half hours
Die Hards: Typhoon? No biggie. No amount of life-threatening weather was going to ruin these devoted fans' day. Hat's off to them. "Rock Steady For Life"—absolutely!

Kool Bob Love) hosted the annual "WONDER-Full: Tribute To The Wonders Of Stevie" party Saturday night at BK Studio Lofts in Brooklyn. Like every year, the place was packed, the music was pumping and the dance floor was jumpin' off — a wonderful time indeed!

Subway Art: 25th Anniversary Edition Celebration...Revolutionary Books, NYC

It's known as the bible of graffiti—Subway Art by legendary photographers Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper, who famously captured the movement in New York City in the '70s and '80s. Now, 25 years (and over half a million copies) later, the bestselling book has been re-released in a new larger-than-life, deluxe format that features brand new pictures and text by Martha and Henry.

I stopped by the celebration on Wednesday night at Revolutionary Books on 26th Street to join friends, fans and famed graffiti writers in catching a signed copy of the new collector's edition, which, not surprisingly, completely sold out.

It's a well-known address to all New Yorkers: 315 Bowery—the former home of the iconic punk rock club CBGB. These days, designer John Varvatos' men's boutique has taken the stage. At the invitation of my good friend Ari Kassman, I stopped in Thursday night to catch a performance by Mad Juana. (Varvatos, an avid rock 'n' roll fan, continues to keep the music alive by featuring live bands from time to time. Just two nights prior, the legendary New York Dolls performed to kick off the designer's new monthly XM Sirius Satellite Radio show "Born In Detroit".)
Admittedly, I was more intrigued by the ghost of CBGB than anything, but of course, a rockin' crowd always inspires me.

The stores' centerpiece: a gigantic black chandelier. Ahhhhh...

I love going to parties at the Adidas Originals store. For one, I don't have to stand in line (thank you Mr. Daniel Roditi, a.k.a. the Adidas O.G. ambassador). Two, I can always count on there being an ultra-cool crowd (thank you Mari for letting me borrow your camera!). And three, there's great shopping incentives and discounts. Thursday night's Shaman Works Listening Party included all of the above. Plus a blue paper gift bag filled with a few goodies.
